ILPUC Resources |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| The ILPUC website will aim to gather together the best articles, blog entries, videos and other multimedia about teaching and learning with Learning Platforms. | |||||||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||||||
ILPUC Events |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | Who are they for? | ||||||||||||||||||||
| ILPUC events are for school ICT Advisors and others involved in using Learning Platforms in Primary, Secondary and FE. They do not cover technical, deployment or support issues. They are about developing and sharing ideas for developing learning. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. | Why are they called ILPUC Events? | ||||||||||||||||||||
Because they are not run or influenced by any of the Learning Platform suppliers, so discussions are free of LP specific marketing, and concentrate instead on shared experiences of learning. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| 3. | What do ILPUC events look like? | ||||||||||||||||||||
| They take place in a venue not too far from where you work, typically a hotel, with between 12 and 30 delegates. They start at 10 in the morning and go on until 4. They are very intensive during that period however, with a working buffet lunch. The idea is to leave the day buzzing with ideas and with plans for further action when you return to your school. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 4. | Tell me in more detail | ||||||||||||||||||||
The delegates are people like you from schools in many different local authorities and using a variety of LPs, probably both proprietary and open source. The day is split into short sessions, some involving presentations 'from the front' but most stimulated by pre-prepared multimedia based on real school experience. Typically at least twice during the day you will be in a group of 5 or 6 people tasked to develop a cross school project in a 'strand' of learning that you have selected together. If all goes well you leave with contacts from other schools and an agreed plan for how you can together involve your pupils in a practical and valuable project. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| 5. | Event frequency and location | ||||||||||||||||||||
Because of the size of event we can be flexible in quickly putting together an event once we have achieved a certain level of demand in a region. Click here for the CONTACT FORM where you can express your initial interest and secure your place on the waiting list. Note that events will initially be limited to English locations, and are scheduled to start in May 2010 - delayed from original proposed start as VLE implementation has been slower across the UK than we hoped.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| 6. | Event delegate cost | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Outside of London these events currently cost just £100 for the day (including lunch costs). You are responsible for travel costs including any parking charge at the hotel or venue. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 7. | Developing multimedia material to stimulate discussion | ||||||||||||||||||||
| There is much good work going on in leading schools, with months and years of experience using LPs. At the same time, many delegates are only just starting to use LPs. We are therefore starting a number of initiatives to stimulate the production of the multimedia materials teachers need. Our first competition is below. | |||||||||||||||||||||

|||||||||||||||||||||
| First prize: £300 to spend in Jessops (or online) on a Video Camera/Camcorder. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Runner up prizes (5): £ 70 as above for a digital camera. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Closing date: Oct 14th 2010. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Summary of what you need to do | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Create a 5 minute video, from a student perspective, of how the school/college Learning Platform has made learning more interesting and effective. Your potential audience is 20,000 plus schools and 100,000 plus teachers who are planning to use a Learning Platform and need inspiration. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Rules: | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. Video must be 5 minutes long, and available in a format suitable for PC delivery. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. Video must be presented from a pupil perspective. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 3. Submission must come from a school, with the written approval of the Head teacher. Support by CLCs and advisors is welcome, but must be behind the scenes. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 4. Entry must pick on no more than 2 strands as defined below. Credit will be given for content that enables other schools to understand what has been done and copy and build on the ideas. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 5. All videos entered must be available to be used at ILPUC events to stimulate ideas from other schools. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 6. Any pupil shown in the video must have a standard release form signed by their parents to agree to them appearing. Videos will not be shown on the web except for the winner of the first prize. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 7. Judging. SUMS Online will select a shortlist then will appoint a small panel of independent third parties who advisors or teachers to make a final decision. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 8. If you plan to enter please contact us well in advance with details of your chosen strand to ensure that we agree that the rules have been met. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 9. Submission by CD to the main SUMS address (see www.sums.co.uk) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 10. The decision of David, MD of SUMS online is final in all matters. There are no appeals procedures... | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 11. A maximum of two entries per school are allowed. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| What are 'strands'? | |||||||||||||||||||||
| There are many schools with excellent stories to tell. There is also a danger of great overlap. We have therefore created a number of 'strands'. The strands can be seen here . | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 8. | Relationship to LP Suppliers | ||||||||||||||||||||
The ILPUC events are in no way hostile to LP suppliers. It is just that teachers have said that they want to avoid the discussions being influenced by LP marketing. Suppliers are welcome to attend as delegates, and can provide an A4 brochure/leaflet to delegates with any product announcements etc at a notional cost. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| 9. | How do I indicate that I am interested | ||||||||||||||||||||
| To indicate that you would wish to attend one or more events complete the contact form (link above), or to help ILPUC events develop in a way that is useful to you, then please Twitter @sumsonline or email david@sums.co.uk | |||||||||||||||||||||
| ............................................................................ David of SUMS Online (www.sums.co.uk) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 10. | Who organises ILPUC Events? | ||||||||||||||||||||
| ILPUC Events are managed by SUMS Online, who provide maths, phonics and other software to Learning Platforms. No mention of SUMS content is made at any ILPUC event in order to maintain the principle of avoiding supplier driven conversations. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| 11. | Where did the ILPUC idea come from? | ||||||||||||||||||||
| From a Twitter conversation with @4goggas and @JohnColby supported and developed by many others (see below). | |||||||||||||||||||||
| ************************************************************************************* | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Selection of ideas that helped form the ILPUC concept. | |
| 1. | You’d have my 100% support on developing a Learning Platform conference which is not run by one of the Learning Platform suppliers. |
| 2. | Having just watched a presentation given by Doug Belshaw on sharing resources and E-Learning, I think this conference is a great idea. Jenny Stoodley, ICT Teacher, Perins Community School, Alresford. |
| 3. | Yes think that an Independent Learning Platform Conference is a good idea - great way to share resources and experiences. Twitter by @teacherofict |
| 4. | Having read about the conference on Twitter, I'd be really interested to hear about how people are using their platforms for teaching and learning, without hearing any adverts or disagreements about the best supplier. To that end, I'll happily present if it would help. I recently spoke about the LP development at Grappenhall Heys in Warrington at The Power of the Platform, a conference for Warrington teachers. Matt Boot. |
| 5. | Happy to share our experiences too. 412 schools by January 2010. |
| 6. | Would (also) like to hear about GApps and Wave, or any learning package which might work with schools and which supports them online. @4goggas (whose blog triggered the whole idea) |
| 7. | I think the #ilpuc sounds like a great idea @lparfitt |
| 8. | Think the whole thing is an excellent idea .. @andyfield |
| 9. | We would be really interested supporting you with ILPUC. Let us know if we can help with organisation and spreading word. @andreacarr1 |
| 10. | I think that an ILPUC will be fantastic, #frog09 was brill but lets get the competition fired up @niallbrennan |
| 11. | Your brief for a learning platform users' conference sounds interesting. Count me in. @dhellam |
| 12. | This looks like a great idea. I would certainly be interested in coming along to a some of the conferences - both to listen to what teachers are saying and - if there is a chance - to explain what the SALTIS project is trying to achieve and to get some feedback on what teachers would most want to see sorted on the technical & interoperability front. Cripin Weston, Alpha Learning. |
